Breast Milk or Formula?

This is one of the first decisions the expectant mum has to make.

Experts say Breast milk is the ideal food for growing babies. It gives infants all the nutrients they need for healthy development, has a perfect balance of fat and calories. It is safe and contains antibodies that help protect infants from common childhood illnesses.

Sheetles Method

Although breastfeeding is a natural and healthy process, it doesn't come naturally (or easily) to all mums.

 I was lucky enough to be able to breastfeed all my babies.  By the time I breast fed my third baby I was an expert at it. I could breastfeed in public and no one could tell.  All Thanks to the persistent midwives ,as I was ready to give up by the 3rd day after trying to breastfeed my 1st son!!

On the other hand, my sister-in-law had a totally different experience.  Persisted with breastfeeding her first baby for 4 weeks but she could hardly produced any milk, her baby was loosing weight, it was heartbreaking!  Couldn't cope with it any more so in the middle of the night, got her husband to go and find a can of Formula milk and never looked back.  Happily formula feeding her now 3rd baby ;)

Some mums feel guilty by not being able to breastfeed their baby.  Whether you Breast or Bottle Feed, you bond with your baby just fine, as it's an important part of connection between mum and baby.

It is a hard decision to make,but here are some points you may wish to consider :-

* Antibodies passed from a nursing mother to her baby can help lower infection
* Breast Milk is easily digested by a newborn's immature system (therefore breastfeed babies eat more frequent than formula fed babies)
* It's convenient, there's no need to warm up bottles in the middle of the night or last minute rushing to the shops
* A nursing mother will usually need 500 extra calories per day, which means that she should      eat a wide variety of well-balanced foods. This introduces breastfed babies to different
tastes through their mothers' breast milk (need to be aware of what you eat and drink, since things can be passed to the baby through the breast milk)
* It's free & most of all
* It's beneficial for mum too. Breastfeeding burns calories and helps shrink the uterus, so nursing moms may be able to return to their pre-pregnancy shape and weight quicker. Also studies show that breastfeeding helps lower the risk of breast cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. It may help decrease the risk of uterine and ovarian cancer

Formula Feeding

* A nutritious alternative to breast milk and even contain some vitamins and nutrients that breastfed babies need to get from supplements
* It's convenient and flexible to a working mother. Once bottles are made the partner/caregiver can feed the baby a bottle at any time (although this is also true for women who pump their breast milk)
* Because formula is less digestible than breast milk, formula-fed babies usually need to eat less often than do breastfed babies
* Mums who opt to formula feed don't have to worry about the things they eat or drink that could affect their babies
* It's expensive
* Carefully follow directions on how to mix with water and quantities

 Whatever option you choose, be sure to talk to your doctor about the choices available to help you make the decision that's best for both you and your baby.
